"My now-wife and I bought a car together, but I hadn't owned a car before. Bridget had but sold it about 2 years before. Erie wasn't able to sell us insurance then because of lack of insurance history, so we went with another company (Geico) instead. Six months later, I called Erie again, and I cut my rate by 46% by switching to them."

Minimum coverage car insurance usually isn't enough coverage.

If you can't afford to buy more, minimum coverage is better than nothing. But the limits are usually very low. If you cause an accident and you don't have enough coverage for the injuries and damage you cause, you have to pay for those bills yourself. Choosing higher liability limits helps protect your finances against those large bills.

Erie auto insurance coverage

Along with the standard car insurance coverages, such as bodily injury coverage and collision insurance, Erie offers several useful and unique car insurance coverage options.

Featured benefit: Rate Lock

One of the most notable optional benefits Erie provides is its "Rate Lock" offering.

trophy icon

If you have a safe driving history and add Rate Lock to your policy, Erie will only increase your auto insurance rates if you make a change such as adding or removing a driver, changing your vehicle or updating your address.

Otherwise, your rates will stay the same year after year, even if you get in an accident or make a claim to your insurance. However, if you get in an accident, a rate increase could catch up with you at a later time when you move or make other changes to your policy. Erie Rate Lock isn't available in all states.

Accident forgiveness

Your rates won't increase after your first at-fault accident after three years of safe driving with Erie.

If your pet is hurt in a car accident, this coverage pays up to $500 per animal and up to $1,000 total per accident. Pet coverage is included on Erie's standard policy.

Erie's standard policy includes coverage for rental cars and roadside emergencies such as towing or tire changes.

Erie may pay up to $350 for personal items, such as clothing or luggage, that are damaged while inside your car.

If you lock your keys in your car, Erie will pay up to $75 for a locksmith, as long as your policy has comprehensive coverage.

If your car is less than two years old and it's totaled, Erie's Auto Security add-on pays to replace it with the newest comparable model year. If your car is older than two years old, the Auto Security add-on will pay to replace it with a comparable car that is two years newer than yours was.

Erie's Auto Plus package includes extra coverage, including a diminishing deductible, extra days of rental car coverage, a $10,000 death benefit and increased coverage for things such as personal items, emergency travel costs and trailers that you're using but don't own.

Erie car insurance discounts

On top of its cheap rates, Erie offers several car insurance discounts that could help you get a cheaper rate. Some discounts, like savings for bundling and having safety features on your car, are common across most insurance companies. But Erie also offers several more unique discounts.

Erie's specialized discounts include:

  • Youthful Driver: Unmarried drivers under age 21 who live with their parents can save with this discount. That's a helpful perk, because rates for young drivers tend to be high.
  • Youthful Driver Longevity: This discount gives unmarried drivers under age 21 a cheaper rate if they were previously listed on another Erie policy, such as their parents' insurance policy.
  • teenSMART: Your teen driver could get up to a 20% discount on car insurance if they complete this four-hour program, which includes video courses, driving simulations and actual driving activities.
  • YourTurn: This is Erie's safe-driving app, also called a telematics program. It tracks your driving and gives you points based on how safe you are behind the wheel. You can trade the points for virtual gift cards or charitable donations.

Erie also offers savings for college students and for paying your annual bill in full.

Erie home insurance coverage

Erie home insurance comes with all the standard coverage options you'd expect, including dwelling, personal property and liability coverage.

Depending on where you live, you may also be able to add helpful add-ons to personalize your coverage. Optional coverages include:

Guaranteed replacement cost

Guaranteed replacement cost means Erie will pay to rebuild your home, even if the rebuilding cost is more expensive than your insurance amount.

If you add service line coverage to your policy, your Erie insurance will pay for damage to buried service lines, like your water and gas lines.

This coverage pays for breakdowns in your home equipment systems, like your air conditioner, furnace or water heater.

If your home's roof or siding is damaged and you have this option on your policy, Erie will pay extra to make sure the replacement roof and siding match what you already have.

Sewer and drain backup coverage covers if your sump pump backs up and causes water damage or if water backs up in any other sewer or drain line.

Erie likely has more add-ons available, but the choices vary depending on where you live. A local Erie agent will be able to help you choose the right options for your needs.

You could also package your home insurance together in one of Erie's "bundles." This isn't the same as bundling your home and auto; instead, Erie's home bundles are packages of coverages that you can buy together instead of adding each option separately. Erie's bundles are called ErieSecure, and they come in three levels: Advantage, Plus and Select. ErieSecure home bundles add extra coverage on top of what's included in the standard home policy.

Erie homeowners insurance discounts

Erie doesn't advertise many home insurance discounts. The discounts it does advertise are common across home insurance companies.

  • Multi-policy discount: You could save between 15% and 25% by getting both your auto and home insurance policies with Erie.
  • Protective devices discount: If you have smoke alarms, a burglar alarm or an automatic sprinkler system, you could save on your Erie home insurance.
  • Advance quote: If you get a quote for home insurance between a week and two months before you need your policy to start, you'll get a lower rate.

Erie likely has more discounts that are specific to certain states. If you want to know more about Erie's discounts where you live, contact an Erie agent.

Erie home insurance reviews and ratings

Erie home insurance policies come with excellent customer service.

Just like with its car insurance, Erie gets about half the expected number of complaints about its home insurance, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). Fewer complaints likely means good customer satisfaction.

J.D. Power also ranks Erie highly for home insurance satisfaction. Erie ranked third nationally, which means customers are usually happy with how the company handles service and claims.

Other Erie insurance policies

Along with car and home insurance, Erie sells lots of other types of insurance policies.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get Erie insurance?

You can buy an Erie policy in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington, D.C.

Who shouldn't get Erie?

Erie isn't the best option if you like to handle your policies digitally. You can only get quote and buy a policy from an agent. Erie operates more like a "traditional" insurance company and relies heavily on agents. This can be great if you want a local point of contact, but it's not ideal for people who want to handle their policies themselves.

Methodology

ValuePenguin rates insurance companies after thorough research into each company's rates, coverage, discounts, service and unique features. Customer satisfaction includes customer complaint info from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) as well as customer satisfaction ratings from J.D. Power.

Auto insurance rates

ValuePenguin's car insurance rates are for a 30-year-old man who drives a 2018 Honda Civic EX, unless otherwise noted.

Minimum coverage quotes are for the state minimum insurance amounts required in each state. Full coverage quotes include higher liability limits as well as comprehensive and collision coverage, which add protection for your own car:

  • Bodily injury liability: $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident
  • Property damage liability: $50,000 per accident
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist bodily injury: $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident
  • Comprehensive and collision coverage: $500 deductible

ValuePenguin's rate data is from Quadrant Information Services. These rates are publicly sourced from insurance company filings and are for comparative purposes only. Your own quotes will likely be different.

Home insurance rates

ValuePenguin's home insurance rates use the following coverage limits:

  • Dwelling coverage: $200,000, $350,000, $500,000 or $1 million
  • Personal liability: $100,000
  • Medical payments: $1,000
  • Deductible: $1,000

All rate data is from Quadrant Information Services, which gets rates from public insurance company filings. Rates weren't available for every state that Erie operates in.

Your rates will likely be different, because prices change depending on your age, home info, where you live, your claims history and more. The quotes on this page are for comparison purposes only.
